I am homeschooled, and 12. I know that you can manage to get into a normal college, but I would like to do it at home. Do you know some websites that I could get a veterinary degree of some kind, without being over 18?

Question by Miss Alexis: To what level do you respect the validity of online degrees?
Online degrees are available now in almost every aspect of the professional world.

General Public:
What are your thoughts on those who achieve their degrees online through accredited online schools? What professions do you feel warrant traditional schooling as opposed to online schooling? Why?

Employers:
What are your thoughts on applicants or the currently employed who have achieved their degrees through online means?

Please, no cited letters or references. Looking for personal introspective only. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by *nono
Personally, I wouldn’t compare it to a formal education and look at it as something lower, and not real (even though it might be). I don’t feel you truly learn from an on line degree. I think that something light like a diploma would be acceptable but nothing more…

Answer by jkadams
There are alot of great schools online. For instance, there is South University, grand canyon, and more. If you are not sure if the school is legit, ask or find out if the school is accredited. I got to South University online it is a great school, that is legit.
Hope I helped

Question by tres_parlor: Are Online degrees just as good as regular colleges? What are the best Online Schools to obtain a degree?
I have a full-time job & a full-time life, so I don’t have the time to attend classes & endure a 4 year + long journey to recieve a degree. I understand that most Online programs take about half the time as actually attending class, but I want to know if the degrees obtained are just as credible.

Best answer:

Answer by Kate
I am on the fence about online colleges … if it is a professional and competitive employment field, then I would take the time to attend college in an actual classroom. I have searched online for “good” online schools and can’t seem to find one that I fully trust and would attend. It does seem easier to attend school online than in the classroom, but I think that the coursework would probably be around the same amount.

Best answer:

Answer by pag2809
My grad school advisor and department chair say no. I know of one reputable distance learning program in historic preservation (Goucher) and one or two in museum studies (Leicester), but not straight history programs. I have an M.A. in history/historic preservation and a job doing research. I don’t think it would have been as valuable an experience online, and nobody would have hired me with an online degree. The format of most graduate classes is discussion, rather than lecture, so you don’t get the same benefits from just reading the material and writing that you get in the classroom.

Question by Ryan T: How important is it to look for a “joint” degree program for obtaining two masters degrees?
Im very interested in obtaining two masters degrees, one in International Affairs and another in Urban Planning. The 1 school that has a joint degree for these is Columbia in NYC. It might be a little more $$$ than I can afford. There are 5 other schools that are highly regarded in both; Tufts, Harvard, Rutgers, Oregon, and Washington. None of those I would consider “comfort” choices, such as being close to home (Cal Poly SLO) or a city I would love to live in (Texas-Austin). So Im having trouble deciding on where all to apply. Any advice?

Best answer:

Answer by Ladida
It may be difficult for you to do this together, is it necessary? You’d likely get more out of each program if you did them independently. Of course, the Columbia joint program is one thing, but as you stated, it is very expensive. (In addition to tuition, cost-of-living in New York is incredibly high. Alternatively, you will be living in an uncomfortably tiny space.)

I would start with one and then pursue the other if you still feel you are interested in it after the first. It may be that if you choose the right urban planning program, you will be able to take some international affairs courses to supplement your studies and decide whether you need the actual degree.

By the way, for urban planning, have you looked at the Univ. Illinois Chicago? It’s a good program and it’s an amazing city.

What do you think? Answer below!
